Arthritis: Myth or Fact

Arthritis is a chronic disease that has over 100 different rheumatic forms.  Arthritis affects 1 in 3 adults, yet it is often misunderstood.  How much do you know about the debilitating disease?

1 The leading cause of disability in the United States is from Arthritis related conditions.

Fact. 9 million Americans are on reported disability for their condition.  Having a disability can cause stress to you and your family.  The financial burden, even with assistance, may leave you feeling powerless.  As a country, the disability and medical care from arthritis alone costs an estimated 65 billion annually.

2. Only seniors have arthritis.

Myth. According to The Arthritis Foundation, 67% of diagnosed cases of arthritis are of individuals under the age of 65.  Many people notice the first symptoms of arthritis in their 30’s.  Even more startling is that 50,000 children in the United States suffer from Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, and about 300,000 suffer from all arthritis related conditions combined.

3. There is no cure for arthritis.

Fact. There is currently no cure for arthritis; however there are many ways to control the symptoms. Exercise, diet, and supplements can be very helpful.  You may benefit from joining a support group where you can share your stories, concerns, goals, and different techniques that worked well for you.

4. You should take it easy if you have Arthritis.

Myth.  Staying active is the key in managing arthritis symptoms.  Physical activity helps to keep your joints flexible, build muscle strength, and control weight.  Swimming, yoga, and walking are low impact exercises that are easier on the weight bearing joints.

5. Glucosamine Supplements don’t work.

Myth. Our bodies produce Glucosamine naturally. However, as we grow older we lose the ability to produce sufficient quantities. Having enough Glucosamine is essential to producing the nutrients we need to produce synovial fluid. When you have a Glucosamine deficiency, cartilage hardens and bone spurs develop which leads to deformities in the joints. Your mobility becomes limited and in short, this is how osteoarthritis develops. A high quality liquid Glucosamine supplement can aid your body to rebuild and rehabilitate cartilage, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain.
