Can Fido or Fluffy make it as Vegetarians? (part 1)
In the past, we have talked about the importance of diet for pets dealing with arthritis. This is a very important issue and one that many pet owners do not address properly.

Feline Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is an inherited trait involving multiple gene pairs - it is not congenital (meaning an animal is not born with it).

Using Glucosamine to Ease Arthritis Pain in Pets
Information on how glucosamine actually works for easing arthritis pain in cats, the science backing glucosamine, and how to select the best glucosamine formula for dogs...

Maximizing Your Pet's Joint Health

By J.R. Rogers

Anyone who reads these columns knows by now that I am a big fan of dealing with pet arthritis using liquid glucosamine. Without a doubt, it has changed the way that individuals and veterinarians are viewing safe and effective ways to treat arthritic pets.

Delivery and Synergy
A great many of you contact me asking questions about this business of "why" certain ingredients appear in a certain product and also about the effectiveness of those ingredients. Let's take a look at those factors again.

Liquid vs. Pills or Capsules
This is easy to understand and the clinical evidence is very strong. Using a liquid form of glucosamine and particularly a pharmaceutical quality product far outdistances the use of pills or capsules. In a liquid form, glucosamine delivers glucosamine four to five times faster than pills or capsules. For openers, that is good.

Other Active Ingredients
Going back to "why" humans use vitamin supplements is a starting point. Over the years, scientists have learned a great deal about supplements. One important discovery would be that the same principals apply to humans as to our pets. Exactly what their nutritional needs are can differ a little from ours but certain basic principles do apply.

The Anti-Oxidants
We have talked about these before. As antioxidants, the "big three" vitamins are A, C and E. These vitamins play a major role in human and pet health. To maintain optimum cell health, pets have basically the same needs as you do. What may be even more important is that each of these vitamins is more effective when used together. This is called working together "synergistically."

Joint Health in Pets (and, Humans)
Research has proven that antioxidants work better together. For example, taking each separately is not going to be as effective as taking them in a product that has all of them. In terms of viewing a liquid glucosamine product, it is essential that you have these antioxidants in the product.

Insofar as joint health is concerned, antioxidants clear away the free radicals that cause joint damage, including proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans. Antioxidants are important components of cartilage health and without this antioxidant activity, the joint destruction this disease causes can increase.

Putting It All Together
This is all a little more complicated than that but then, we are not all scientists. The point is that using a high-quality liquid glucosamine product is going to give your pet an advantage over pills and capsule forms. Equally important, when the major antioxidant vitamins are working together synergistically, you are going to get even better performance from the product you are using. It goes without saying, that it is a lot less expensive than trying to buy these ingredients separately.

See you next time.

MY MALE LHASA APSO WAS DIAGNOSED WITH DIMENTIA,(DOGGIE ALZHEIMERS) HE IS ON MEDICATION FOR THIS, BUT ALSO NOW HAS TERRIBLE TROUBLE WALKING OR GOING UP AND DOWN STEPS. NEEDLESS TO SAY HE IS GETTING QUITE HEAVY NOW, AND IT IS DIFFICULT FOR ME TO LIFT HIM UP AND DOWN. IT APPEARS TO BE PAINFUL FOR HIM, I HAVE TRIED EXPENSIVE PILLS FROM THE VETS AND THEY DO NOT SEEM TO SHOW ANY IMPROVEMENT, ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE WITH A LHASA THAT HAS EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. My Rottweiler has Hip Dysplasia, she was diagnosed at the age of 1 year with the worst grade hips there could be. Instead of going through surgery I opted to help her with exercise and supplements. We are doing great. I was just thinking about perhaps switching to Syn-flex from my normal supplement I give her which is:

Nutri Aid GCM which contains
Glucosamine HCL 10,000mg
Chondroitin Sulphate 2000mg
M.S.M. 2000mg
Vitamin C 700mg
Mineral Manganese 100mg

Mineral Manganese of course is used by the dogs body to take the Glucosamine into the blood stream. I also feed her a raw diet and add ground organic flax seeds for the omega 3's and Hemp oil which has the proper balance of Omega 3,6 and 9. I give her sardines and salmon a few times a week. Free run hen eggs and only free range/free run meats and organic veggies. I add Bromelain Plus to her food every once in awhile and Alfalfa and to build immunity I give her Astragalus and for digestion I give her d-enzymes and dandelion root. I also give her Yucca root 4 days a week and take her off it for 3 days a week. My Vet also recommended that I take her off Yucca for about 3 months of the year just to give her body a break as too much Yucca is not good as it can do the opposite of what it is doing. I find it great as an anti inflammatory....

So, finally my question. I notice that Syn-Flex has Yucca in its mixture. Would it be advisable to only give Syn-Flex for a few months of the year then go back to Nutri Aid GCM...I only want whats best for my little girl and I don't want to over due the Yucca.

Any thoughts on this or am I being overly anal?
