Hurricane KatrinaIt is ironic that in the last issue I mentioned that "storm season" is with us again. Of course, no one could have known that the Southern United States would be devastated by Hurricane Katrina. I think it is safe to say that some of you were prepared and had made some accommodations for your pets. However, given the fury of this storm, it is also likely that many of you were not prepared. I am not sure that anyone could have prepared for a disaster the scope of this one. It is not often that I break stride from the subject of pet arthritis. However, when there is a tragedy as great as this one I think it is appropriate to do so. Donations The latest news on donations that have been made to date shows that some $761 million dollars has been raised on behalf of victims. However, that figure does not include the pet sector. My Appeal to You Put yourself in the shoes of those pet owners and it takes little more than that to motivate you. If your pet was lost or injured, you would feel their pain. There are many organizations working on behalf of these pets so the choice is yours. Again, if there is anything you can provide by way of donations, please do so. It is going to be a long road to recovery. Hopefully, we can all contribute in some small way. In advance, let me thank you. I know that you will do what you can. See you next time. Just wanted to let eveyone know how much I have appreciated the advice and info I found on this site. I have a 12 year old male Chow with arthritis. He had a slight limp for a year or so and then rapidly started to decline about 5 months ago (severe limping, legs shaking when he stands, excessive panting, couldn't get comfortable, could barely walk.) The vet put him on Rimadyl (50 mg. twice a day.) That helped somewhat. I tried Cosequin -- small improvement. I stopped that and stated giving him MSM twice a day, and a supplement called Lakota K9 MX from a pharmacy in Canada. It is a homeopathic blend of various herbs -- I've seen a TREMENDOUS improvement in my old boy! I also switched his food to Harvest Bake about a month ago (as recommended by someone on this site.) I've seen even more of an improvement since he's been on that food. He is still obviously an old dog, but it's incredible to see the change in him. He is even back to chasing the chipmunks that venture into the yard! Thanks again to everyone for all the advice and support!

Please don't give your dog ibuprofen. You can give her a baby aspirin (I believe it is 81 mgs.) or a quarter of an adult aspirin 2 X's a day. Best to give her aspirin on a full tummy. You should know quickly after giving an asprin if you dog was in pain as she should feel some relief.
If she is in pain something is wrong. Hope you can find a way to get her to a Vet.
